"Sun-ripened and abundant. The summer tomato is the heartbeat of the Maltese kitchen."
Vivid tomatoes with scattered garlic cloves glow against a textured background of soft magenta, bold pink and brushed orange in this original acrylic on paper from The Mediterranean Table, part of Luna Burlo's debut Works on Paper series.
In Malta, the summer tomato is not simply an ingredient. It is a ritual. Grown in abundance under the fierce Mediterranean sun, tomatoes are eaten fresh, shared generously, and preserved with care. They are sunbaked into rich pastes and slow-cooked into sauces that carry the warmth of summer through the cooler months. At the heart of Kapunata, Malta's beloved cold summer dish, the tomato sits alongside capsicum, capers, and olives in a celebration of everything the season offers. For Luna, the summer tomato is a memory of a kitchen that smelled of garlic and simmering sauce, and a table that was always full.
One of just twelve originals in this collection, painted on 210gsm paper and hand-trimmed to approximately 42 x 54.5cm. A slight variation of up to 0.5cm in height may occur — a natural characteristic of a hand-finished work.
Bold and full of life. Perfect for a kitchen or dining room that welcomes warmth, colour, and good conversation.
Framing We recommend professional framing to honour this original work. As a cost-effective alternative, a standard 50 x 70cm frame with a 40 x 50cm mat board works beautifully — note that a few centimetres of the painting's top and bottom edges will sit behind the mat, however most works in this series have been composed with this in mind.
This painting is part of a coordinating set of four, alongside "Sage", "Capsicums", and "Olives". Each shares the same warm magenta and orange ground. Collect one or collect them all.
