A lush bunch of sage with purple flowers blooming sits against a warm background of soft magenta, bold pink and textured/brushed orange in this original acrylic on paper from The Mediterranean Table, part of Luna Burlo's Works on Paper series.

Sage has grown wild across the Mediterranean for centuries and is valued as much for its medicinal properties as its culinary ones, it was considered a sacred herb by the ancient Romans, who believed it conferred wisdom and longevity. For Luna, sage carries a more personal resonance — a habit inherited from her Maltese father, who hung home grown chillis to dry, and continued in her own Melbourne garden where she grows and dries sage to this day. This painting is as much about the continuity of small rituals as it is about the herb itself. The way a garden connects us to the people and places that shaped us.

One of just twelve originals in this collection, painted on 210gsm paper and hand-trimmed to approximately 42 x 54.5cm. A slight variation of up to 0.5cm in height may occur — a natural characteristic of a hand-finished work.

Framing We recommend professional framing to honour this original work. As a cost-effective alternative, a standard 50 x 70cm frame with a 40 x 50cm mat board works beautifully — note that a few centimetres of the painting's top and bottom edges will sit behind the mat, however most works in this series have been composed with this in mind.
