Begin with what genuinely speaks to you: not what you think you should like, not what is fashionable, not what matches your existing decor. The pieces that will still matter to you in ten years are the ones that meant something from the beginning.

Set a comfortable monthly or quarterly budget and stick to it. Even $75 to $150 per quarter adds up to a meaningful collection over two or three years. The discipline of choosing carefully within a budget often produces more interesting collections than unlimited spending. Every choice brings more joy when you make it deliberately.

Start small in size. An A4 or A3 print is an affordable, easy-to-frame entry point that lets you bring an artist's work into your home without significant commitment.
